As digital imaging use becomes widespread, ASD's imaging research would have to evolve to (a) support multiple imaging modalities which could be used to deliver very high quality images, (b) extract, analyze and present to the user higher level information derived from the pixels and thus enable efficient document and/or process workflow, (c) deliver the picture to a multitude of imaging devices in an efficient and secure manner, and, (d) process, communicate and display still as well as two-dimensional moving picture data and three-dimensional image data.
